Cold sores are caused by a virus known as Herpes simplex. Cold sores are small blisters which develop on the lips or sometimes around the lips. Besides being very itchy and painful, cold sores can make you self-conscious. Cold sores lasts for about 6-7 days but can come back again. In most of the cases they leave their mark which fades away with time.

Are they Infectious?

Yes they are very infectious. And can be easily passed on to other people especially those with close contact. It is most infectious when it is blistering. You should try to avoid touching cold sores, because you can pass the virus on to other people either by shaking hand or by other different ways. Sometimes, but very rare, the virus can be transferred to your own eyes. So avoid squeezing, pinching or pricking the cold sore as this can spread the infection.

Symptoms Of Cold Sores

The symptoms of cold sore usually varies from person to person. And the symptoms start to appear after quite some time. But some of the common but rare symptoms are

  • High Fever
  • Headache
  • Producing more saliva than normal
  • Dehydration
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen glands
  • Irritated or swollen gums (sometimes having blisters)

If you do not have these symptoms then most probably you just have a primary infection in which sometimes you tend to have blisters only.


Cold sores can easily be treated at home. The virus doesn’t leave the body after the initial breakout, it simply remains dormant in your nerve cells.  However, it can be triggered by a number of factors like stress, illness, hormonal imbalance etc. But as they can’t be unavoidable, so here are a few things you can do to calm or shorten the length of a cold sore.

  • Ice

  • Aloe Vera

  • Zinc Oxide

  • Lemon Balm
